The first year of a baby’s life is filled with incredible milestones, challenges, and joys. As a parent, finding the right tools and activities can make all the difference. Here are some handy items and experiences that made my baby’s first year so much easier.

1. Biggie Smalls White Noise Machine & Night Light

The Biggie Smalls White Noise Machine & Night Light was a lifesaver for us! We started using it from day one in the hospital, and it provided a familiar and soothing environment for our little one. The world outside the womb is bright and quiet, unlike the cozy, dark, and rhythmic sounds of mama’s tummy. This compact machine became an essential part of our sleep routine, helping with both naps and nighttime sleep. Its portability made it perfect for naps on the go, leading to better, more restful sleep for everyone.

2. Love to Dream swaddles

The Love to Dream Swaddle is a game-changer for better baby sleep! Unlike traditional swaddles that restrict movement, this unique design allows babies to sleep in their natural arms-up position, which helps with self-soothing. It creates a cozy, womb-like feeling while still allowing gentle movement, reducing startle reflex and promoting longer, more restful sleep. The easy zip-up design also makes nighttime diaper changes a breeze—no complicated wrapping

3. Baby Einstein Jumper

The Baby Einstein Jumper was a lifesaver in our home. This interactive toy kept my baby entertained and stimulated for hours. The variety of activities and sensory experiences helped with motor skills development, and it gave me a much-needed break to get things done around the house. We would highly recommend if you have the space for it in your home.

4. Baby Development Classes at Bub Hub

Enrolling my baby in stimulation classes at Bub Hub in Broadacres was one of the best decisions I made. These classes provided a structured environment for my baby to explore new sounds, sights, and textures. It was also a great opportunity for us to bond and for me to meet other parents with whom I still talk to.

5. Consistent Sleep Schedule with Huckleberry

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule was crucial for my baby’s well-being and my sanity. Using Huckleberry helped us create a personalized sleep plan that worked wonders. The app’s insights and recommendations were spot-on, leading to more restful nights for the whole family. We used this for both of our children and reaped the benefits of better sleep for them, for us and well rested happy children.

6. Playdates at the Park

Regular playdates at the park with other children were essential for my baby’s social development. These outings provided a safe space for my baby to interact with other children of all ages, explore different environments, and burn off energy. Plus, it was a great way for our nanny to connect with other caregivers.

7. Overnight Stays at Family’s House

Sleeping out at family’s house was a strategy we used to help our baby get accustomed to different environments. This exposure made our baby more adaptable and comfortable with change, which was especially helpful during travel or when we had guests over. Because of this our child is completely comfortable sleeping out or having others put her to sleep at night. This gave us some freedom to have our own time as parents and nurture our connection..

8. Exploring Flavors with Solid Starts App

Introducing solids was an exciting journey, tedious at times and scary but the Solid Starts app was our go-to resource. It provided detailed information on how to safely introduce a variety of foods. Trying all sorts of flavours not only expanded my baby’s palate but also made mealtime fun and adventurous.

9. Embracing Mess and Dirt

Letting my baby get messy and dirty was a key part of their sensory development. Whether it was playing in the mud, finger painting, or exploring different textures, these messy activities were essential for learning and growth. It also taught me to relax and enjoy the process.

10. Building Immunity by Not Sterilizing After 6 Months

After the six-month mark, I stopped sterilizing items to help build up my baby’s immunity. This approach allowed my baby to be exposed to more germs in a controlled manner, which is crucial for developing a strong immune system. I honestly believe there are many ways to build up your child's immunity and being more relaxed with what they touch and are exposed to can significantly help with this process.

11. Interaction with Pets

Allowing my baby to play with our pets was another way to expose them to a variety of microbiomes. These interactions were beneficial for both my baby and our animals, fostering a loving, yet slightly abusive relationship and contributing to my baby’s overall health.

12. Exposure to Different Textures and Messy Play

I made a point to expose my baby to a wide range of textures. From soft fabrics to rough surfaces, these experiences helped my baby become comfortable with different sensations. It also supported their sensory development and curiosity about the world around them. They are now happy to be barefoot and covered in dirt which I absolutely love. We also went to Baby Builders classes which encouraged all of this.

13. Incorporating naps on the go according to our schedule was essential for keeping my baby well-rested. Being prepared with all necessary items, such as a portable travel crib, a pram or a carreri, a cozy swaddle, a white noise machine, a dark and a favourite stuffed toy, ensured successful naps wherever we went. This approach allowed us to stick to our consistent sleep schedule while enjoying the flexibility of being out and about.

14. Taking our baby on holiday to different places has been a wonderful way to build up our confidence and experience life together as a family. Traveling with a baby might seem daunting, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to see our little one adapt to new environments and enjoy new experiences. We didn’t want to limit ourselves or stop exploring new places, and traveling as a family has enriched our lives with cherished memories and adventures. Plus, it has shown us that it’s possible to balance parenthood with our love for travel, making every trip a special and bonding experience.

15. Eating dinner with our baby made mealtimes more relaxed and enjoyable experiences by focusing on sharing the meal together rather than just watching them eat. We discovered that sitting down as a family and engaging in conversation takes the pressure off our little one. It allows them to explore food at their own pace while observing our mealtime habits. This approach has fostered a positive eating environment, making dinner time less stressful and more about connection and enjoyment for everyone.

Conclusion

The first year of a baby’s life is a whirlwind of discovery and growth. By incorporating these handy items and activities, I was able to create a stimulating, nurturing, and joyful environment for my baby. Every parent’s journey is unique, but sharing these experiences can hopefully provide some helpful insights for those navigating the wonderful world of parenthood.
